NEW MEMBER INFO
Welcome to the Sons of St. Andrews Golf Club. Please read below for helpful information that will get you up to speed on how our club operates.
- GHIN/Handicap: You were assigned a GHIN# when you joined our club via the SCGA portal. Use this to post all scores for rounds played outside the club. This can be done on the GHIN app, the USGA website, or even at a terminal at the course after your round. FYI you do not need to post your SOSA tournament rounds, as our Golf Genius system will do that automatically. If you saved any legitimate scores that you shot prior to having a GHIN #, you can post those retroactively and the data will be used to calculate your handicap. Please see the SCGA or USGA websites for more information, and contact our handicap chair Steve Frazier at forefrazier@gmail.com with any questions.
- Handicap formula: Your handicap is based on the average of your best 8 scores in your last 20 rounds. If you have fewer than 20 rounds in the system, you will still get a handicap but it will be more volatile until you have 20 scores as data points. For more info, see here. Note that due to the formula used, your handicap is based on your potential rather than your "average score", and that most golfers only "shoot their handicap" or better approximately 20% of rounds played.
- Index/Playing Handicap: Your index will traslate to a "Playing Handicap" (formerly known as Course Handicap) based on the course and tees you play in any given round. This is automatically calculated when you post scores in the system or play in SOSA events, but you can look up your playing handicap for any course/tee combimation in the GHIN mobile app. Your playing handicap will often be 1 or 2 strokes higher than your index, depending on the slope/rating of the course and tees you play.
- Adjusted score: Per USGA rules, the max score you can take on any hole is a "net double bogey." This means that if you get a stroke on that particular hole based on your handicap, you can take a triple bogey max. If you do not get a stroke, you take a double bogey max. If you get 2 strokes, you can take a quadruble bogey. Example: Bob has an index of 9, with a playing handicap of 10 from the Blue Tees at Black Gold. He makes an 8 on a par 4 that is the 10 handicap hole on the scorecard. When posting his hole by hole score, Bob will post a 7 on that hole as that is a net double bogey.
- Lion's Cup: This is our season long points competition. You don't need to do anything extra to participate, as tournament results will automatically earn you points based on your play.
- Skins: All tournaments feature a net and gross skins game. You will be entered automatically by virtue of participating in the tournament.
- Golf Genius: We use Golf Genius for all club admin, tournament registration, live scoring, etc. Please make sure you know your login credentials and download the Golf Genius app on your phone so you can score tournaments live. Most club announcements are sent out via email and text from the Golf Genius system, so please don't block email or text messages in your profile settings or you will miss out on important club announcements. For Golf Genius questions, please email Josh Olson @ josho@angelflightwest.org.
- Pairings/Tee times: We do our best to honor early/late tee time requests if it is going to be a make or break deal for you to play in an event. We also try to pair members with at least one guy they know fairly well in each tournament. You may designate one playing partner by using the 2 man registration option when you sign up for an event.
- Flights: Our typical event features 3 flights: Augusta, Bandon and Carnoustie. Rather than having a static handicap bracket for flights, we break down each month's field into 3 equal size groups so you are competing against a group closer to your ability level with net handicap scoring. While there is some fluctuation depending on the field for each event, the average flight break down is usually about 0-7, 8-14 and 15+
- Money List: All money earned during the season is tracked and paid out after our club championship.
